To reward ourselves for all of our work, we hoped to go for brunch in the neighborhood but Irene had shut everything down. It was a freakishly rare phenomenon we're not sure we'll see again in our lifetimes: the East Village without brunch.
That didn't stop us having our Sunday Bloody Marys at home. We whizzed a single giant yellow tomato with Worcestershire, prepared horseradish, Tabasco, salt and brine from Rick's Picks awesome Smokra (okra pickled in a spicy smoked paprika brine). We were out of lemons so we opted for a dash of sherry vinegar for a little extra tangy bite.
As we sipped them, we debated whether to call them Bloody Irenes in honor of the hurricane or Sunny Marys because of their rich yellow color. A coin toss gave us the answer, then we toasted to a hurricane well and safely passed.
